Special education
and related services are provided or coordinated by Speacial
Education Local Plan Areas (SELPA) and Local Education Agencies
(LEAs) for children (birth to 22) with disabilities. Under
California's Early Start Program, SELPAs and Regional Centers
have shared responsibility for developing and coordinating
early intervention services including transition to preschool
at the local level. The SELPAs can provide local program information,
local service directories, and referral information on other
public and private education and related services available
in your community.
You may explore a variety of preschool programs to find one
that suits the needs of your child and family. Community preschools,
parent participation preschools, school district state funded
programs, school district special day classes and Head Start
are among the potential options. The Head Start Program is
a free comprehensive preschool program for income eligible
families that also includes children with special needs. Classes
are available for three- and four-year-old children throughout
the WarmLine's six county region. Part and full day classes
may be available. Contact your SELPA, local Head Start, or
the WarmLine Family Resource Center for more information about
preschool options.
